Man was first called to a priority focus at the dawn of creation: the food system*. Let me assure you that a concern for food and food systems is alive and well in me. I adore the tactile and visual life of being a creator and devourer of food. From tucking vegetable seeds with my fingers beneath the rich soil in my garden beds, to adorning a plate with freshly-plucked concord grapes and aromatic rosemary, to sharing my table with friends and family, our food life speaks of the divine, and is deeply filling.
I celebrate hands as my most-prized kitchen tools, as I did in my first published article, a short essay in The Washington Post. And I raise my hands in thanks to God daily for giving me taste buds, olfactory nerves and eyes to soak up the beauty and variety of flavor nuances, color, aroma and texture of things that nourish me so magnificently.
I was “Foodie” before “Foodie” was in vogue. I cut my teeth in the test kitchens of Oxmoor House/Southern Living Cookbooks, and the food photography studios of Cooking Light Magazine. And while I freelance as a food stylist, the images on this page are simply quick iphoto snaps of things I’ve prepared before I whisked them to the table; hear me say these are NOT styled images of styled food. What I want to share is what struck me in the moment: the sheer pleasure of creating something fresh and delicious to eat, preferable with others, to nourish our bodies and souls. I hope they inspire you to good eating.
*Gen 1:13 (on the third day) 11 “Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.”
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.” Our concern is not ours alone; it i established as an initial priority for God, man, all creatures and creation.
